For music the sound was truly impressive out of such a small package. But when I hooked back up my old Marantz stereo with a couple small satlelite speakers and a sub, the sound was soooo much better. Sound was quite comparable to similar sized Bose products. However, when using it for movies, regular conversation in movies never sounded natural, partly because the speakers were about a foot below the tv. I boxed it back up and resold it. Maybe whoever bought it will have a different experience.
The voices are crisp and loud. I was WRONG. I was a little worried that this all-in-one solution would sound hollow and ruin my HD movie experience. Very easy to set up and has plenty of options for any home theater arrangement. This is big sound in a small package. You don't even need the optional sub (unless you really want to feel the bass).the built in sub does a great job. Fits perfectly on top of a TV, or on a nighstand (where I have it). I would recommend - great product for a great price.
There are pair of dialog controls on the remote control that helped, but as this set-up is new for me further tweaking is needed. I bought this as part of my households switch to HD/LCD/Blu-Ray and wanted a simple solution without room wide wire running. During normal TV viewing the speaker is excellent and vastly improves the sound quality of the A/V setup. The overall sound improvement over the TV is great, but as mentioned by another reviewer dialog can get muddled in with the sound mix and at times has a hard time competing with the bass. While watching The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray I had to adjust the volume several times so as not "blow out" the room, because at points the dialog was too low and then the overall sound was too loud during action scenes. I didn't really expect the speaker to provide surround sound, but it does a good job with filling the room with high quality sound.
Overall, I'd say it does a good job of providing enhanced sound, esp. Bought the MAINstage a couple of months ago as a simple solution for better TV sound. The MAINstage helpfully arrives with every type of cable necessary for hooking up your TV and video accessories. for dialogue, but it would be an exaggeration to call it "surround sound". Still, for the money and the simplicity, it was a good purchase.
There are many such products on the market, most of them quite pricey. None of them, in my opinion, actually provide even a poor imitation of "surround sound." The MAINstage speaker system, however, does a good job within its limitations, i.e., improving the sound of the normally inadequate speakers in most flat screen tvs.
